THE PROMISES TO DAVID:
As a ‘man after God’s own heart, it is quickly evident that David is a ‘Godly’ man even in his youth. His musical ability and his faithfulness are recorded in many Psalms. His ruler as King is based upon his trust in God and he becomes a spiritual leader as he guides the people in the way of the LORD. As a result of his faith and obedience, the LORD made promises to David regarding his ‘seed’ or descendants. This is the third of the great promises of the Bible. This is highlighted in:
2 Samuel 7:12-16: In this chapter, David is determined to build a temple for the LORD. However, God declares that because he is a man of war, he is not the one who would build him a dwelling place. The LORD reveals that one of David’s ‘seed’ or descendants would build Him a house. The promises made in these verses point to a future son who the New Testament reveals is Jesus Christ!
(Israel is also to benefit by the rule of his Kingdom: 2 Samuel 7:10,24)
References which refer to the promises made to David are yet unfulfilled, are found in Jeremiah 33: 17; Amos 9:11,12; Acts 2:29,30.
There are many passages in the Bible that explain and confirm that Jesus Christ is the promised seed. For example; see lsaiah 9:6, and compare this to Matthew 1:1. Confirmation that Jesus is the son of David is also provided in Luke 1:30-37 & Acts 13:22,23.
The passage in 2 Samuel 7:12 specifies a time when “you lie down with your fathers”, and refers to the death of David. cp also Acts 2:29. Before David died, he appointed his son Solomon as his successor.
